Q&A w/ Miss Trouble

Earlier this year, italian-born Neurofunk master Maztek caused earthquakes when he dropped his rictor-scale worthy Warpath LP. The album was released on Maztek's own imprint 0101, a label created with the intention to platform cutting edge dance music that breaks the mould. Having done just that with his latest LP, it's only natural that Maztek should enlist the likes of Bl4ck Owlz’ RedPill for the first in a series of remixes. Taking on one of the LP’s biggest tracks ‘Shake The Foundation’ featuring haunting vocals from London-based singer, songwriter and MC Miss Trouble, RedPill succeeds in taking the track to a new and unexpected level of relentless energy.

Miss Trouble, having been on the dance music scene for around 17 years, has performed with the likes of Dj Fresh and featured on renown labels such as Hed Kandi. Today she is a proud member of the Viper Recordings family, currently holding a residency at Viper club nights and is a featured vocalist for the label. We caught up with Miss Trouble to chat about the release and more.

How did you find your way into the drum 'n' bass scene?

I was introduced to jungle back in '93 via pirate radio and became a massive raver! It wasnt til 1999 or so that my mate MC Freaky passed me a mic live on radio and said "Batt, do something!". I'd secretly been writing a few bits so that was kinda helpful! Then I went to university and became a resident MC at their club nights, which lead onto a residency at Formation nights up in Leicester with dj SS. At some point I did some work in Bristol as well with DJ Clipz aka Redlight which led to my first ever release on Roni Size's label Full Cycle called Pump It Up. Plenty more since but those were the beginnings.

What has been your favourite project to work on in your career so far?

So many to choose from! I'd say working on a albums worth of work with a friend (who's now one third of house act Jaded) for a year and a half, which has never seen the light of day (yet). Being locked away in a studio for months on end vibesing off each other, with other producers roaming the halls was one of the best creative experiences for me. As Curtis Lynch once said to me, "its the best place for you to be". Although nothing came of this project, it was towards the end of this where I locked myself in the same studio for a weekend on my own, and wrote my biggest tune to date: Metamorphosis. So for me in a way, it was the surprise cherry that came as a result of months of open inspiration and experimentation.

What do you think of RedPill's remix of 'Shake The Foundation'?

Haha is that a real question? It's sick, obviously :) He's a talented young French dude, very easy to work with, and I'm sure you're gonna see a lot more of him in the near future. Big up to Maztek for setting up the collab.

What collaborations can we expect to see from you in the future?

I'm working on a few bits which I won't reveal just yet, but I am also going to go into album mode shortly. Still early stages. Gonna be exciting to see what comes out! I want to create a fully rounded experience, something you can listen to from beginning to end. Some stuff will be unexpexted. Some will be exactly as you imagined it. All in all Im gonna take some risks and I'm definitely excited about that!
